DETAILED ITINERARY
Your journey begins the moment you land in Cairo. After clearing the airport, you'll transfer to your hotel in the heart of Giza, where the pyramids rise just beyond your hotel. If your flight arrives early enough in the day, you can join an optional excursion to Saqqara to see the Step Pyramid of Djoser, considered the world's oldest complete stone building, before settling in for the evening. Whether you spend the afternoon resting after your travels or exploring the site at Saqqara, everyone comes together for dinner at the hotel, where you'll meet your fellow travelers and get a first taste of Egyptian hospitality before the adventure truly begins the next morning.
Today is all about ancient wonders. Riders will saddle up for a horse ride around the Giza Plateau, weaving past the Great Pyramid and the Sphinx from a vantage point few visitors ever experience. Non-riders will explore the same monuments on a guided walking tour, with plenty of time to admire the scale of these 4,500-year-old marvels up close. From there, the whole group heads to the newly opened Grand Egyptian Museum to see thousands of artifacts, including the complete treasures of Tutankhamun, displayed together for the first time. In the afternoon, you'll fly south to Luxor, arriving in the evening to settle into your West Bank guesthouse before dinner.
This morning, everyone heads into the Valley of the Kings and then to the Temple of Hatshepsut, Egypt's great female pharaoh, whose mortuary temple rises dramatically from the desert cliffs. Both riders and non-riders travel by vehicle and explore the tombs and temple together. After a picnic lunch, it's time to cool off — riders will swim alongside their horses in the Nile, a joyful and unforgettable experience, while non-riders enjoy a swim of their own in the river. As the heat of the day fades, everyone enjoys a peaceful sunset boat ride on the Nile, followed by dinner at a local restaurant.
Today is the day you've been waiting for! Riders set off before sunrise on horseback into the Western Desert, while non-riders make the journey by jeep, both arriving at our private eclipse camp with hours to spare before totality. You'll settle in, have lunch, and prepare cameras and safety glasses as the sky begins its slow transformation. As the moon fully eclipses the sun, temperatures drop and a 360-degree twilight glow sweeps across the desert — a rare and profound moment shared together in the sand. Afterward, everyone returns to Luxor by jeep at a relaxed pace; riders cap off the evening with a sunset swim alongside the horses in the Nile, while non-riders enjoy free time before the group reunites for dinner at the hotel.
This morning, the whole group visits Karnak Temple, the vast complex of pillared halls and towering obelisks built up over centuries by generation after generation of pharaohs. After lunch back at the hotel, you'll have some downtime to rest by the pool or relax before the afternoon's exploring resumes. Later, you'll visit the Luxor Museum for a closer look at artifacts drawn from the surrounding temples and tombs, before continuing on to Luxor Temple itself, especially beautiful as it lights up at dusk. The day wraps with dinner at a local restaurant, giving everyone a chance to swap stories from the eclipse the day before.
Riders start the day with a sunrise horse ride through the sugarcane fields and farmland of the West Bank, a peaceful window into everyday village life along the Nile. Non-riders instead visit Deir el Medina, the village once home to the artisans who built the royal tombs, along with the beautifully painted Tombs of the Nobles nearby. After lunch at a local restaurant, everyone reunites to visit the Ramesseum, the memorial temple of Ramesses II, followed by the Temple of Medinet Habu, one of the best-preserved temples on the West Bank with vivid, larger-than-life reliefs. The group shares a final dinner together at the hotel that evening.
After breakfast at the hotel, it's time to say goodbye — to Luxor, to the horses, and to the new friends made along the way. Depending on your flight time, you'll be transferred to Luxor International Airport at your leisure, carrying home memories of temples, desert sand, and the sun and moon aligned above the Valley of the Kings. For those continuing on, this is also the departure point for the optional Hurghada Extension.
OPTION 2 (LUXOR): 4 DAYS / 3 NIGHTS
A shorter stay built around the eclipse itself, for guests on a tighter schedule or second-timers.

DETAILED ITINERARY
Your adventure begins as you land in Luxor and transfer to our charming West Bank guesthouse, just a few minutes' walk from the Nile in the small village of Ramla. Take the rest of the day to settle in, unpack, and relax after your travels — there's no rush today. In the evening, the whole group comes together for dinner at the hotel, a warm welcome to Luxor and a chance to meet your fellow travelers before the itinerary kicks into gear the following morning.
Riders begin the day with a sunrise horse ride out through the sugarcane fields, followed later by a swim alongside the horses in the Nile — one of the most magical experiences the trip has to offer. Non-riders instead spend the morning exploring the Valley of the Kings and the Temple of Hatshepsut, with lunch and some downtime back at the hotel before the group reunites in the afternoon. As evening falls, everyone boards a traditional felucca for a sunset sail on the Nile, then heads to a local restaurant together for dinner, swapping stories from the day and anticipating the eclipse tomorrow.

Afterward, everyone returns to Luxor by jeep at a relaxed pace; riders cap off the evening with a sunset swim alongside the horses in the Nile, while non-riders enjoy free time before the group reunites for dinner at the hotel.
On your last morning, riders head out for one final sunrise horse ride along the banks of the Nile, a peaceful send-off after an unforgettable few days. Non-riders instead pay a visit to Karnak Temple, taking in the towering columns and obelisks of Egypt's largest temple complex one last time. From there, it's time to depart — whether you're catching a flight home or continuing on to the optional Hurghada Extension for a few more days of sun, sea, and horses on the Red Sea coast.

OUR MISSION
More Than a Tour — A Rescue at Work
Horses & Hieroglyphs rescues and rehabilitates working horses from all over Egypt. Many have known hard lives — mistreatment and neglect at the hands of abusive or ill-informed owners — before coming into our care.
Every journey with us helps give them a second chance: sustaining the horses we care for, and the people who dedicate their lives to healing them. When you ride with us into the desert, you’re also standing with them.
GOOD TO KNOW
FREQUENTLY ASKED
Dubbed the "Eclipse of the Century," the August 2, 2027 total solar eclipse offers an extraordinary 6 minutes and 22 seconds of totality over Luxor—more than double the duration of most eclipses and the longest land-visible total eclipse until 2114. Paired with Upper Egypt's near-guaranteed clear August skies, viewing conditions are virtually perfect. Experiencing this cosmic rarity over the ancient landscape around the Valley of the Kings connects you directly to the sacred history of the sun god Ra. What makes our experience truly magical is the journey itself: our riders will travel into the desert on horseback at daybreak, arriving at our private viewing camp to witness totality alongside your noble equine companions. As midday turns to twilight, the temperature drops, and a 360-degree sunset glow envelopes the landscape, you'll share this astonishing, once-in-a-lifetime moment grounded in the tranquil presence of the horses.
It can be - Luxor in August runs hot, with average daytime highs around 42°C, cooling to a milder 25°C or so overnight. That's exactly why horse welfare and guest safety come first in how we've built this trip. Riding happens only in the cooler early morning hours, or in the Nile, where we cool off together with the horses. Sightseeing is scheduled for early morning or around sunset too, so you avoid the peak heat of the day, and midday is built-in downtime — rest, relax, or cool off in the hotel pool. On eclipse day, the ride out is one-way; horses return by car, just like we do. Vehicles and hotels are air-conditioned, and cold water is always close at hand. And here's the upside of Luxor's August weather: skies are reliably clear, giving us some of the best odds anywhere on the eclipse path for an unobstructed view of totality.
We'll have a dedicated private campsite in the desert exclusively for our group, providing you the ultimate eclipse experience with uninterrupted views. We leave early (riders on horseback, non-riders by jeep car) to arrive on location hours ahead of the event, which gives you plenty of time to settle in and prepare for photography without feeling hurried. Lunch is served at camp before the event and cold drinks are available throughout. Charging for electronic devices will also be available. We stay onsite for the duration of the eclipse and then make our return by jeep car. It will be a relaxed evening, so there is no rush on the way back; non-riders enjoy free time in the late afternoon while riders head out at sunset for a dip in the Nile with the horses.
Because riding is scheduled around the cooler parts of the day and paced to be gentle rather than strenuous, this trip works well for a wide range of ages and fitness levels — including families and older riders. That said, August heat is still a real factor, so if you or a member of your group has a heat-sensitive health condition, we'd recommend chatting with us beforehand so we can help plan accordingly. Non-riding companions of any age are always welcome too.
The deposit is 20% of your total invoice, due at the time of booking. Your spot is not reserved until we receive the deposit.
This tour adheres to our standard cancellation policy, where refund eligibility is subject to the timing of the cancellation request. Please note the deposit is nonrefundable.
Light, breathable layers are your best friend — think loose linen or moisture-wicking fabrics rather than heavy cotton. A wide-brimmed hat, sunglasses, and high-SPF sunscreen are essential, and we'd recommend a lightweight long-sleeve for sun protection during the desert ride (it's cooler than it sounds!). Bring an insulated, reusable water bottle — it'll keep your water cold for hours, and we'll keep it filled throughout the day. A battery-powered hand fan or misting fan is also a great add for midday downtime and waiting for totality.
